Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

1. Who is eligible for membership at HKBC?

All residents of Hong Kong who are 18+ are eligible to join the Hong Kong Badminton Club.

2. How do Play Times work?

All members receive a member tag with their name and color.   The color denotes your level (beginner, intermediate, advanced).   Members who are present must put their member tags on the game allocation board.  HKBC organizers will group member tags into groups of 4 according to colors and assign a court to each group.  Each game will last 15 minutes.   After 15 minutes, all members must stop play and review the game allocation board which has been re-organized to give members the opportunity to play a variety of games with different people throughout the Play Time.   Depending on attendance, members may have the opportunity to rest 15 min. between games.  All members must remove their member tags from the game allocation board when they leave.

3. How do I know what color level I'm supposed to be in?

Green - Beginner

Blue - Intermediate

Red - Advanced

If you are unsure about your level and have had some badminton experience, start with blue and judge whether you should move down to green, stay as blue, or move up to red.  To qualify as a red player, you may be required to pass a brief test.

4. Are we allowed to play single games?

Depending on member attendance each night, HKBC organizers may allow members to challenge other members to single matches.

5. What if I just want to play with my friends?

You are welcome to ask HKBC organizers to group you and your friends together during game allocation.  During an activity session, speak with the HKBC organizer who is responsible for allocating games and s/he will help meet your requests.

5. What if I'm not a member?

Drop-in players are welcome for a fee of $50 per night.   Acceptance to play is based on availability as HKBC members have first priority.  The HKBC will cap each session at no more than 32 players each night to ensure enough play time to our members.

6. What if I don't have my own equipment?

All players are required to bring their own racquets, running shoes, and water.  The court and shuttlecocks (birdies) are provided.   Members who wish to play with feather birds must bring their own.  In the future, we may purchase spare racquets for our members to borrow.

7. When is the next tournament, ladder, competition, or event?

HKBC will notify members via email and our website well in advance of any upcoming tournaments and/or events.  HKBC members are responsible to register themselves for all events.

8. Will HKBC organize sessions at other times or locations in Hong Kong?

Currently, HKBC only offers Sunday night sessions at Hong Kong Park Sports Center (Central).   We may consider expanding for the next term (2006).

9. Can I bring children along to play?

Hong Kong Badminton Club sessions are only available to adults 18 and over.

10. Can I cancel or postpone my membership?

Once registered, you may not cancel or postpone your membership.  HKBC membership is non-transferable and non-refundable.
